 
 わが国の九州南部から台湾、中国南部それに熱帯アジアに分布し
ています。高さは３〜４メートルほどになり、大きな濃緑色の葉が叢
生します。沖縄では、芳香のある葉で食物を包んだり、葉鞘を縄や
網、編み細工などに加工するそうです。５月から７月ごろ、長い花茎
を伸ばして、総状花序に巻き貝のような花を咲かせます。
ショウガ科ハナミョウガ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Alpinia speciosa。
英名は Shell ginger, Pink porcelain lily。
Shell ginger belongs to the Zingerberaceae (the Ginger family). It is an
evergreen perennial herb that is distributed southern Kyushu of Japan south
to Taiwan, south China and tropical Asia. This herb can reach 3-4 m in
height, and the leaves are large dark green and forms tussock. The leaves
are used to wrapping foods, and leaf sheathes are made ropes, nets and
knottings in Okinawa Islands. During May to July, the long flower stalks
grow and spiral shell-like flowers bloom in racemes.
