It is a deciduous woody vine that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. It is an interspecific hybrid of "Akebi" (Akebia quinata) and "Mitsuba-akebi" (Akebia trifoliata) and is limited to areas where both grow. It appears an intermediate morphology of these two mother species. The leaves are palmately compound leaves with 5 leaflets and sometimes 3 leaflets. The dark purple flowers come in April to May. The fruits ripen in October.
