 
 アフリカが原産だと考えられています。わが国へは中国を経て奈良
時代に渡来しました。名前は、「胡（いまのベトナム北部）」から渡来し
た「麻（油にとんだ種）」ということから。種子の色によって黒ごま、白
ごま、黄ごま、金ごまの４つに大別されます。高さは８０センチほどに
なり、８月から１０月ごろ、淡紅色または白色の花を咲かせます。
ゴマ科ゴマ属の一年草で、学名は Sesamum indicum。
英名は Sesame。
Sesame (Sesamum indicum) belongs to Pedaliaceae (the Sesame family). It
is an annual herb that is probably native to Africa. This herb was
introduced into Japan via China in Nara Era (1,300 years ago). According
to seed-coat color, it divides roughly four varieties; black sesame, white
sesame, yellow sesame and gold sesame. It can reach about 80 cm in
height. The pale rose-pink or white flowers appear from August to
October.
