ききょう (桔梗)

わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国北部に分布しています。日当たりのよい草地に生え、高さは５０〜１００センチになります。葉は狭卵形で鋭い鋸歯があり、互生します。７月から９月ごろ、茎頂に青紫色をした鐘形の花を咲かせます。古くは「あさがお」と呼ばれ、山上憶良の歌「朝顔は朝露負ひて咲くといえど夕影にこそ咲き増さりけり」にも登場しています。乾燥した根を桔梗根（ききょうこん）と呼び、お屠蘇の材料や、たん去りの妙薬としても利用されています。中国語では「桔梗（jie geng）」と呼ばれます。 写真中６・中７の品種は、「五月雨紫花」 中８・下は、「アストラ」（サカタのタネ）。 |

The Baloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) belongs to Campanulaceae (the Bellflower family). It is a perennial herb that is found throughout Japan, as well as on the Korean Peninsula and in northern China. It grows in sunny grasslands and reaches a height of 50 to 100 cm. The leaves are narrowly ovate with sharp serrations and are arranged alternately. From around July to September, it produces bluish-purple, bell-shaped flowers at the tips of its stems. Historically known as "asagao", it appears in a poem by Yamanoue no Okura: "Though it is said the asagao blooms bearing the morning dew, it is in the evening shadows that it truly blossoms". The dried root is called "kikyo-kon" and is used as an ingredient in otoso (New Yea's sake) and as an effective remedy for phlegm. In Chinese, it is called "桔梗" (jie geng). |
