Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata) belongs to the Fagaceae (the Beech
family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native from south-western
Hokkaido to Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, the Korean Peninsula
and China. This tree grows in open brushes at hills to mountains, and can
reach 10 m in height. The oblong leaves are arranged in alternate. The
many string-like male flowers and the several female flowers at base of
clusters are borne from June to July. The blossoming flowers have distinct
odor and attract insects. The bottom two photos are a kind of galls.
