"Kuro-soyogo" (Ilex sugerokii) belongs to Aquifoliaceae (the Holly family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from the Pacific Ocean side west of Yamanashi Prefecture to the Chugoku region in Honshu and Shikoku in Japan. It grows on ridges and rocks in mountainous areas and grows up to 5 m high. It produces small white flowers from June to July, and its fruits ripen to red in fall. The Japanese name comes from the meaning of "Soyogo" with black bark. The "Akamino-inu-tsuge" which is distributed from the central region of Honshu northward to Hokkaido, is a variant.
