 わが国の本州、静岡県以西から四国・九州、それに台湾や中国に分
布しています。よく分枝して高さは２メートルほどになります。葉は楕
円形で先が尖り、対生します。６月から７月ごろ､枝の先端に芳香の
ある白い花を咲かせます。果実が熟しても裂開しないことから「口無
し」と書かれることもあります。碁盤の足はこの実をかたどってあり、
口出し無用を意味するとか。よく植栽されているのは、八重咲きの園
芸品種です。
アカネ科クチナシ属の常緑低木で、学名は Gardenia jasminoides。
英名は Gardenia, Cape jasmine。
Garenia belongs to Rubiaceae (Madder family). It is an evergreen small tree
that is native to westward from Shizuoka prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku,
Kyushu of Japan, Taiwan and China. This tree is much branched and can
reach about 2 m in height. The leaves are elliptic and opposite with acute
tips. The fragrant white flowers come in the terminal branches from June to
July. The fruits ripen orange, though do not split open. The double-flowered
cultivars are generally planted.
