地中海沿岸が原産です。わが国へは江戸時代の末期に渡来しました。乾燥した森の林縁などに生え、高さは75〜100センチになります。葉は小さな鱗片状で目立たず、卵形の葉のように見えるのは枝が変化した葉状枝です。早春に、葉状枝の真ん中に小さな緑白色の花を咲かせます。果実は液果で、晩秋に赤く熟します。
ユリ科ナギイカダ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Ruscus aculeatus。
英名は Butcher's broom。
Butcher's broom belongs to Liliaceae (Lily family). It ia an evergreen shrub that is native to the Mediterranean. This shrub was introduced into Japan in the late Edo period. This tree occurs in outskirts of dry woods and can reach 75-100 cm in height. True leaves are small inconspicuous and scarly, ovate cladophylls which varied from branches look like leaves. Small greenish-white flowers grow from the center of the cladophylls and bloom in the early spring. Fruits are berries and ripen red in late fall.
