ヨーロッパが原産です。現在では世界中に帰化しています。わが国へは明治時代のはじめに渡来しました。道ばたや荒れ地に生え、高さは１．５メートルほどになります。茎は直立し、葉は長楕円形で縁は著しく波打ちます。６月から９月ごろ、茎頂や葉腋から穂状花序をだし、小さな緑白色の花を咲かせます。萼片（翼）は広卵形で、縁に鋸歯がありません。果実ははじめ緑色で、のちに赤色に変わります。

タデ科ギシギシ属の多年草で、学名は Rumex crispus。英名は Curly dock。

The Curly dock (Rumex crispus) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Buckwheat family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe. This herb is introduced into Japan in the days of Meiji Era (1868-1912), and distributed worldwide now. It grows in roadsides and wastelands, can reach 1.5 m in height. Stems are errect. Leaves are oblong with extremely waved edges. From June to September, the spikes with small greenish-white flowers are seen on the terminal stems and axils. Sepals are broad ovate and not serrate. Fruits are green at first and turn red when ripen.
