 インド東部の東ガーツ山脈（Eastern Ghats Mountains）が原産と考えら
れています。わが国へは、奈良時代に中国から渡来しました。したが
って名前も、漢名の「茄」、「茄子」に由来しています。いろいろな果形
があり、ふつうには「中長なす」や「長なす」ですが、きわめて長い「博
多長」や丸型の「丸なす」、「賀茂なす」などもあります。生育期は６月
から９月ごろ、ちょうど原産地の雨季にあたります。
ナス科ナス属の多年草で、学名は Solanum melongena。
英名は Eggplant, Aubergine。
The Eggplant belongs to Solanaceae (the Potato family). It is a perennial
herb that is considered native to the Eastern Ghats Mountains, east India.
This herb was introduced into Japan via China around Nara Era. Eggplant
has various shapes of fruit, and grows during June to September when
corresponding with the monsoon season of east India.
