わが国の固有種で、北海道の南部から本州の福島県から静岡県までの太平洋側に分布しています。海岸沿いから丘陵に生え、高さは２〜４メートルになります。若い枝は褐色の鱗状毛に被われます。葉は広楕円形から広卵形で互生します。葉の表面は緑色で、裏面には灰白色の鱗状毛が密生します。４月から５月ごろ、淡黄色の花を下垂して咲かせます。花弁のように見えるのは４裂した萼筒です。果実は楕円形の偽果で、５月から７月に赤く熟します。和名は、果実が夏に熟すことから。

グミ科グミ属の落葉低木で、学名は Elaeagnus multiflora。英名は Gumi、Oleaster。

The Gumi (Elaeagnus multiflora) belongs to Elaeagnaceae (the Oleaster family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from southern Hokkaido to the Pacific Ocean Side of Honshu in Japan. This tree grows in coastal areas to hillsides and can reach 2-4 m in height. The young branches are covered with brown scarly hairs. The leaves are broad elliptic to broad ovate and alternate. The upper leaves are green and the reverse sides are covered with grayish-white scarly hairs. The pale yellow flowers are drooping and come in April to May. The 4-divided sepals look like petals. The false fruits are elliptic and ripen red in May to July. The Japanese name (Natsu-gumi) comes from the fact that the fruits ripen in the summer.
