わが国の本州から四国・九州に分布しています。丘陵や山地の林縁などに生え、高さは20〜70センチになります。茎には4稜があり、軟毛が密生します。葉は卵形から広卵形で鋸歯があり対生します。8月から10月ごろ、枝先に穂状花序をだし、淡紫色の唇形花を咲かせます。萼は毛に被われます。全体にレモンに似た香りがあります。 
シソ科シソ属の一年草で、学名は Perilla frutescens var. citriodora。英名はありません。 
"Lemon-egoma" (Perilla frutescens var. citriodora) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is an annual herb that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This herb grows in hills and woodland forest edges, etc., and the height is 20-70 cm. The stems have four ridges and are covered with dense soft hairs. The leaves are ovate to broad ovate, serrated, and arranged in opposite. The pale purple libiate flowers bloom in the spikes from August to October. The calyxes are covered with hairs. The whole plant are lemon-like smelling.
