 ヨーロッパの地中海沿岸が原産です。高さは４〜５メートルほどにな
り、心形の葉が対生します。４月から５月ごろ、枝先に大きな円錐花
序をだし、芳香のある淡い青紫色から赤紫色の花をいっぱい咲かせ
ます。白花もあります。和名では「むらさきはしどい（紫丁香花）」と呼
ばれます。
モクセイ科ハシドイ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Syringa vulgaris。
英名は Lilac。
Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) belongs to the Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a
semi-tall deciduous tree that is native to the coastal areas of the
Mediterranean Sea. This tree can reach 4-5 m in height and the heart-
shaped leaves are opposite. The large panicles are borne on the terminal
branches and bloom scented pale bluish-purple to magenta flowers from
April to May. There is also a white flower-coloered variety.
