The Spanish broom (Spartium junceum) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native from the western coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands. It is the only species in the genus Spartium. This shrub grows in arid grasslands or woodland margines and can reach 2-3.5 m in height. The stems are erect and glabrous. The leaves are narrow-elliptic, opposite and arranged sparsely. The bright yellow flowers come in the apical racemes in summer. The fruits are legumes and ripen black. Spanish broom was introduced into Japan in the early Edo Era (about 400 years ago).
