わが国の各地をはじめ、サハリンや朝鮮半島、中国、ウスリー地方に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは３０〜７０センチになります。葉は３回３出複葉で、小葉は卵形から長楕円形、ときに２〜３裂します。５月から７月ごろ、茎頂に集散花序をだし、黄緑色の花を咲かせます。花弁のように見えるのは、６個の内萼片です。果実は藍色に熟します。名前は、葉が「ぼたん」に似ることから。

メギ科ルイヨウボタン属の多年草で、学名は Caulophyllum robustum。英名は Papoose root。

Papoose root belongs to Berberidaceae (Berberry family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed all over Japan and Sakhalin, Korean Peninsula, China and Ussuri. This herb occurs in mountane forests and can reach 30-70 cm in height. The leaves are triternate compound with the ovate to oblong leaflets. The leaflets are occasionally divided into 2-3 lobes. The cymes come on the stem apices and bloom yellowish green flowers from May to July. The inner-sepals are six and look like petals. The fruits ripen indigo blue.
