Melothria japonica

"Suzume-uri" (Melothria japonica) belongs to Cucurbitaceae (the Gourd family). It is an annual herb that is native westward from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu, as well as Jeju-do (southern Korea). This herb grows on wettish places, such as riverbeds, and climbs up by the tendrils. The small white flowers bloom from August to September. It bears spherical fruits about 1 cm in diameter in the fall. The Japanese name is said to come from its smaller size compared to the "Karasu-uri" (Trichosanthes cucumeroides), or from the fact that the fruit resembles a sparrow's egg.
