 
 アメリカのテキサス州からニューメキシコ州それにメキシコに分布し
ています。過酷な環境に適応します。短い幹から細い葉を放射状に
だし、球形の樹形となります。葉は光沢のある緑色でさび色を帯び、
縁には裏側に反り返った鋸歯があります。葉の基部はスプーン状に
なっています。５月から８月ごろ、３．６メートルにもなる長い花茎を伸
ばして、淡い緑白色からクリーム色の花を咲かせます。古くから放牧
移動のときの屋根やバスケット、マットやロープそれに干ばつの際に
は家畜の飼料としても利用されてきました。
リュウゼツラン科ダシリリオン属の常緑小低木で、学名は Dasylirion
leiophyllum。英名は Smooth sotol, Desert candle, Smooth-leaf sotol。
Smooth sotol (Dasylirion leiophyllum) belongs to Agavaceae (Agave
family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed to Texas, New Mexico
of United States and Mexico. This shrub adjusts to harsh environment. It
bears narrow leaves on the short truck and forms globose crown. The
leaves are glossy and rust-colored green with recurving serratus edges. The
long flowering stalks; about 3.6m in length are borne and bloom pale
greenish white to cream flowers from May to August. Smooth sotol has
been used to make temporary roofs, baskets, mats, ropes and cattle feed
during drought.
