わが国の本州、北陸地方から山陰地方にかけての日本海側に分布しています。多雪地の山地に生え、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。葉は２回３出複葉で、小葉はゆがんだ卵形です。葉は常緑ですが、古くなると茶褐色に変わります。４月から５月ごろ、４個の長い距のある、錨に似た花がうつむいて咲きます。 |

The Barrenwort (Epimedium sempervirens) belongs to Berberidaceae (the Barberry family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed on the Sea of Japan side from Hokuriku region to Sanin region in Honshu, Japan. It grows in the mountains of heavy snowfall and can reach 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are 2 times triternate compound, and the leaflets are distorted ovate. The leaves are evergreen, but turn brown as they get older. From April to May, anchor-like flowers with four long spurs, bloom downward. |
