 
 熱帯アメリカが原産です。コロンブスによってヨーロッパに伝えられ、
わが国へは１６世紀に渡来しました。江戸時代から栽培され、多くの
品種が作出されました。代表的な品種には、鷹の爪（たかのつめ）や
八房（やつぶさ）、伏見甘長（ふしみあまなが）などがあります。高さは
３０〜１００センチになり、夏に白い花を咲かせます。果実のかたちは
球形から細長いものまでさまざまで、熟すと赤色や黄色、紫色などに
色づきます。
ナス科トウガラシ属の多年草で、学名は Capsicum annuum。
英名は Capsicum、Red pepper。
Capsicum (Capsicum annuum) belongs to the Solanaceae (the Nightshade
family). It is a perennial herb that is native to tropical America. This herb
was introduced into Europe by Columbus, and also introduced into Japan
in the sixteenth century. This herb has been cultivated from the Edo period
(about 250 years ago), and many cultivars was raised. Typical pepper's
species are 'Takano-tsume', 'Yatsubusa' and 'Fushimi-amanaga'. It can
reach about 30-100 cm in height. The white flowers bloom in summer. The
fruits have many varied shapes, globe to elongate cone and so on, and
ripen red, yellow or purple.
