 わが国の本州、関東地方南部以西から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半
島南部に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは２０メートルほどになり
ます。５月から６月ごろ、新枝の葉腋に穂状花序にだし、強い香りの
ある淡黄色の花をいっぱい咲かせます。建築材や器具材、椎茸原
木などに利用されます。大阪や奈良でも里山や鎮守の森によく見か
けます。別名で「こじい（小椎）」とも呼ばれます。
ブナ科シイ属の常緑高木で、学名は Castanopsis cuspidata。
英名は Japanese chinquapin。
Japanese chinquapin belongs to Fagaceae (Beech family). It is an evergreen
tall tree that is distributed westward from southern Kanto district of Honshu
to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan and southern Korean Peninsula. This tree
occurs in mountains and can reach about 20 m in height. The strong odor,
numerous, pale yellow flowers come in the axillary spikes from May to
June. The timbers are used for architectures, furnitures or dead logs for
Shiitake. Japanese chinquapin can be found usually in the country-side
forests and grove of a village shrine.
