わが国の本州、関東地方以西から四国・九州、台湾や朝鮮半島南部に分布しています。海岸沿いの崖や丘陵などに生え、高さは2〜3メートルになります。蔓性で、他の樹木などに寄りかかるようにして伸びます。葉は長楕円形から卵状長楕円形で、裏面には赤褐色の鱗状毛が密生します。10月から11月ごろ、葉腋に淡い褐色の筒状花を下垂して咲かせます。果実は長楕円形の偽果で、4月に赤く熟します。台湾華語では、「藤胡頹子」。
グミ科グミ属の常緑低木で、学名は Elaeagnus glabra。英名はありません。
"Tsuru-gumi" (Elaeagnus glabra) belongs to Elaeagnaceae (the Oleaster family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distribute westward from Kanto district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan, as well as Taiwan and the southern Koreal Peninsula. This tree grows in coastal cliffs or hillsides and can reach 2-3 m in height. It is also a trailing vine, grows up and leans against adjacent trees. The leaves are oblong to ovate-oblong and covered densely with reddish brown scaly hairs on the abaxial sides. The pale brown tubular flowers appear on the axiles and drooping down from October to November. The false fruits are oblong and ripen in red in April. In Taiwanese Mandarin, "藤胡頹子".
