 わが国の本州、山形県以南から四国・九州それに朝鮮半島南部や
中国南部、台湾に分布しています。山地の急な斜面や岩場などに生
え、高さは２０メートルになります。葉は広倒卵形から長卵形で、枝先
に輪生状に集まって互生します。５月から６月ごろ、枝先に総状花序
をだし、黄緑色の花を咲かせます。花弁も萼もありません。果実は集
合果で１０月ごろに熟します。１科１属１種で、導管を持たない古いタ
イプの被子植物としても有名です。
ヤマグルマ科ヤマグルマ属の常緑高木で、学名は Trochodendron
aralioides。英名はありません。
'Yama-guruma' (Trochodendron aralioides) belongs to Trochodendraceae
family. It is a the only species in the genus Trochodendron. It is an
evergreen tall tree that is distributed southward from Yamagata prefecture
of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, southern Korean Penninsula,
southern China and Taiwan. This tree occurs in montane steep slopes or
scrags and can reach about 20 m in height. The leavese are broad obovate
to long ovate and crowd at the end of twigs. The racemes are borne and
bloom yellowish green flowers. They have not petals and calyx. The fruits
are aggregates and ripen in October. This tree is famous as an old breed of
ductless angiosperm.
